What is Minims Chloramphenicol for?

Sometimes parts of the outer surface of the eye, such as the cornea (the transparent membrane covering the surface of the eye) or the conjunctiva (the lining of the inside of the eyelids and part of the eye), may become infected with bacteria. Minims Chloramphenicol eye drops can be used to treat this infection and it is effective against many different types of bacteria.

Sometimes, if the eye infection is very severe, your doctor may give you antibiotic tablets as well as this antibiotic eye drop.

Before using Minims Chloramphenicol

You should not use Minims Chloramphenicol if you are allergic to any of the ingredients listed in the section "About Minims Chloramphenicol ".

You should tell your doctor or eye specialist if anyone in your family has or has had a severe blood disorder in the past.

If you are pregnant (or think you might be) or if you are breastfeeding, you should tell your doctor or eye specialist before using Minims Chloramphenicol. It is possible that you will still receive the eye drop, but it is also possible that a different one may be used.

You must not wear contact lenses at any time during the course of your treatment with Minims Chloramphenicol.

After putting the eye drops in your eye, you may find that your eyesight becomes blurred for a short time.

You must not drive or operate machinery until your eyesight has returned to normal. Chloramphenicol eye drops could possibly become less effective or produce allergic reactions if used over a long period of time. In order to prevent this, make sure that you stop using this medicine as soon as your doctor tells you to.

Interactions of Minims Chloramphenicol with other drugs

Chymotrypsin (an eye drop used during cataract surgery) may not work properly if it is given at the same time as Minims
Chloramphenicol.

Using Minims Chloramphenicol

In adults, children and the elderly, the normal dose of Minims Chloramphenicol is one to two drops in the infected eye up to six times a day. If you have a severe infection your doctor or eye specialist may ask you to use this medicine more frequently at first, until the infection starts to get better.

The frequency of treatment can then be gradually reduced. Make sure you follow carefully any instructions that you have
been given.

If you are putting in your own drops, you need to follow these instructions closely.

  • 1. Wash your hands thoroughly, peel the sachet overwrap apart and take out the Minims unit.

  • 2. Twist off cap.

  • 3. Look upwards and gently pull down the lower eyelid.

  • 4. Hold the Minims unit just above your eye and gently squeeze until a drop of liquid falls into the gap between your eyeball and lower eyelid. Make sure the dropper does not touch any part of your eye.

  • 5. Release the lower eyelid and then press gently on the inner corner of your eye for a minute or so. This will help to stop the solution draining away into your nose and throat. This is especially advisable in children.

  • 6. Throw away the rest of the Minims unit when you have finished, even if there is some solution left.

It is very unlikely that you will suffer an overdose after using this product. If you do suddenly feel unwell, however, you should contact your doctor or the nearest casualty department immediately.

If you forget to take a dose of Minims Chloramphenicol, use it as soon as you remember, then carry on taking it as before.

After using Minims Chloramphenicol

Chloramphenicol may cause burning, stinging, itching, skin irritation and dermatitis around the area it has been used on.

These effects are not permanent. Other side effects including severe blood disorders (e.g. aplastic anaemia and bone marrow depression) can occur when using chloramphenicol, but these are extremely rare and your doctor will have taken this into account when deciding to prescribe Minims Chloramphenicol.

Chloramphenicol should not be used over long periods of time as it may become less effective at treating your eye infection.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you suffer from any unwanted effects after using Minims Chloramphenicol that are not mentioned in this leaflet.
